Adoro Te Devote

also known as Adoro Te, Godhead Here in Hiding, Hidden God, Devoutly I Adore Thee

0 / 7

Adoro te devote, latens Deitas, quae sub his figuris vere latitas: tibi se cor meum totum subiicit, quia te contemplans totum deficit.

I devoutly adore you, hidden Godhead, who truly lie hidden beneath these forms: my whole heart submits itself to you, for in contemplating you it wholly fails.

Visus, tactus, gustus in te fallitur, sed auditu solo tuto creditur; credo quidquid dixit Dei Filius: nil hoc verbo Veritatis verius.

Sight, touch and taste are deceived in you, but by hearing alone is it safely believed; I believe whatever the Son of God has said: nothing is truer than this word of Truth.

In cruce latebat sola Deitas, at hic latet simul et humanitas; ambo tamen credens atque confitens, peto quod petivit latro paenitens.

On the cross the Godhead alone was hidden, but here the humanity too lies hidden; yet believing and confessing both, I ask for what the repentant thief asked.

Plagas, sicut Thomas, non intueor; Deum tamen meum te confiteor; fac me tibi semper magis credere, in te spem habere, te diligere.

I do not see the wounds, as Thomas did; yet I confess you to be my God; make me believe in you ever more, hope in you, and love you.

O memoriale mortis Domini! Panis vivus, vitam praestans homini! Praesta meae menti de te vivere et te illi semper dulce sapere.

O memorial of the Lord's death! Living bread, giving life to man! Grant my mind to live on you, and always to savor you sweetly.

Pie pellicane, Iesu Domine, me immundum munda tuo sanguine; cuius una stilla salvum facere totum mundum quit ab omni scelere.

O loving Pelican, Lord Jesus, cleanse me, unclean, with your blood, one drop of which can save the whole world from all its sin.

Iesu, quem velatum nunc aspicio, oro fiat illud quod tam sitio; ut te revelata cernens facie, visu sim beatus tuae gloriae. Amen.

Jesus, whom now I behold veiled, I pray that what I so thirst for may come to pass: that, seeing you face to face, unveiled, I may be blessed in the sight of your glory. Amen.

About the Adoro Te Devote

The Adoro te devote is the most personal of the Eucharistic hymns of St Thomas Aquinas. Kneeling before the Host, the soul confesses that sight, touch and taste fail here, and that faith rests on the word of Christ alone. In seven verses it moves from adoration to the cross, to St Thomas the Apostle, to the loving Pelican whose single drop of Blood could save the world, and ends in longing for the day when the veil is lifted and we see His face.

When prayed: Prayed in thanksgiving after Holy Communion (the Roman Missal places it among the prayers after Mass), during Eucharistic adoration and Holy Hours, and on the Solemnity of Corpus Christi.

About the Adoro Te Devote

What is the Adoro te devote?

Adoro te devote — 'I devoutly adore you' — is a Latin hymn addressed to Christ truly present in the Blessed Sacrament. It is less a hymn for processions than a prayer for the heart: the believer admits that the senses see only bread, and rests instead on Christ's own word, 'This is my Body.' The Church keeps it among her prayers of thanksgiving after Mass.

Who wrote the Adoro te devote?

Tradition attributes it to St Thomas Aquinas (1225–1274), the Dominican Doctor of the Church who also composed the Office for the Feast of Corpus Christi at the request of Pope Urban IV. It has been prayed under his name for centuries, and its blend of precise doctrine and tender devotion is characteristic of him.

Why does the hymn call Jesus a pelican?

An ancient Christian image held that the mother pelican, when her young were starving, pierced her own breast to feed them with her blood. The Fathers saw in this a figure of Christ, who feeds us with His own Body and Blood. 'Pie pellicane, Iesu Domine' — 'O loving Pelican, Lord Jesus' — asks Him to cleanse us with that Blood, one drop of which could save the whole world.

Why does the hymn mention St Thomas the Apostle?

Thomas would not believe until he had touched Christ's wounds, and then confessed, 'My Lord and my God.' The hymn turns this around: 'I do not see the wounds, as Thomas did; yet I confess you to be my God.' It is a prayer for the faith Christ called blessed — the faith of those who have not seen and yet believe.
