Pange Lingua

also known as Pange Lingua Gloriosi, Sing, My Tongue, Tantum Ergo

0 / 6

Pange, lingua, gloriosi Corporis mysterium, Sanguinisque pretiosi, quem in mundi pretium fructus ventris generosi Rex effudit gentium.

Sing, my tongue, the mystery of the glorious Body and of the precious Blood, which the King of the nations, fruit of a noble womb, poured out as the price of the world.

Nobis datus, nobis natus ex intacta Virgine, et in mundo conversatus, sparso verbi semine, sui moras incolatus miro clausit ordine.

Given to us, born for us of a spotless Virgin, he dwelt in the world, sowing the seed of the word, and closed the time of his sojourn in a wondrous way.

In supremae nocte cenae recumbens cum fratribus observata lege plene cibis in legalibus, cibum turbae duodenae se dat suis manibus.

On the night of the Last Supper, reclining with his brethren, having fully kept the law in the prescribed foods, he gives himself as food to the band of twelve with his own hands.

Verbum caro, panem verum verbo carnem efficit: fitque sanguis Christi merum, et si sensus deficit, ad firmandum cor sincerum sola fides sufficit.

The Word made flesh, by a word, makes true bread his flesh, and wine becomes the Blood of Christ; and if the senses fail, faith alone suffices to make firm a sincere heart.

Tantum ergo Sacramentum veneremur cernui: et antiquum documentum novo cedat ritui: praestet fides supplementum sensuum defectui.

So great a Sacrament, therefore, let us venerate with bowed heads; let the old law give way to the new rite; let faith supply what the senses lack.

Genitori, Genitoque laus et iubilatio, salus, honor, virtus quoque sit et benedictio: procedenti ab utroque compar sit laudatio. Amen.

To the Father and the Son be praise and jubilation, salvation, honor, power, and blessing too; to the One who proceeds from both be equal praise. Amen.

About the Pange Lingua

The Pange lingua is the Church's great hymn of the Eucharist, written by St Thomas Aquinas for the Feast of Corpus Christi. It sings the whole mystery in six verses: the Word born of the Virgin, the Last Supper where He gives Himself to the Twelve with His own hands, and the bread and wine made His Body and Blood, where the senses fail and faith alone suffices. Its last two verses, beginning Tantum ergo, are sung before the Blessed Sacrament at every Benediction.

When prayed: Sung on Holy Thursday as the Blessed Sacrament is carried to the altar of repose, on the Solemnity of Corpus Christi and in Eucharistic processions. The final two verses, the Tantum ergo, are sung at Benediction before the priest blesses the people with the Sacrament.

About the Pange Lingua

What is the Pange lingua?

Pange lingua gloriosi — 'Sing, my tongue, of the glorious Body' — is the hymn St Thomas Aquinas wrote for Vespers of Corpus Christi. It tells the story of the Eucharist from the Incarnation to the Last Supper and confesses the change of bread and wine into Christ's Body and Blood, ending in praise of the Holy Trinity. It is counted among the greatest hymns of the Latin Church.

What is the Tantum ergo?

The Tantum ergo is the last two verses of the Pange lingua: 'So great a Sacrament, therefore, let us venerate with bowed heads.' They are sung on their own at Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, while the faithful kneel in adoration, just before the priest raises the monstrance and blesses the people with Christ Himself.

When is the Pange lingua sung?

Above all on Holy Thursday, when the Blessed Sacrament is carried in procession to the altar of repose after the Mass of the Lord's Supper, and on the Solemnity of Corpus Christi and its processions. The Tantum ergo is sung whenever Benediction is given.

What does 'praestet fides supplementum sensuum defectui' mean?

It means 'let faith supply what the senses lack.' Before the Sacrament our eyes see only bread; the hymn asks that faith fill the gap the senses leave, so that we adore what we cannot see. It echoes the line earlier in the hymn: 'if the senses fail, faith alone suffices.'
